In this discussion we can critically investigate traditional Buddhist meditation techniques to try to understand how it is that these techniques are used to develop a meditative state of being. The techniques we will be addressing are concerned with the posture, breath, and disposition to the internal thinking process during meditation time. We will clarify how to implement these techniques and how applying them might illuminate the possibility of an unconditionally mindful state of being. These three techniques are used as a means of unifying the mind & body during sitting meditation. The development of calm clarity is called Shamatha practice in the Buddhist tradition. The next step is to use the clarity of a calm but alert mind & body to develop insight into our own human nature as we observe our minds processes unfolding in the spacious awareness meditation practice. This process of developing insight is called Vipassana practice.
